"V" shape or "Arrow head" formation

A section of Soldiers practising their tactical drills on the Curragh Plains, Kildare, sometime in 1927. This formation was known as the "v" shape or "arrow head" formation, which was used to move across open ground providing maximum security to the front and rear.
